Termite season in South Florida starts in the spring and goes on through the summer. There are two main types of termites that reside in South Florida; Dry Wood Termites and Subterranean Termites with variations within them. During swarming season Termites grow wings and leave their colonies in look for new nesting sites. They usually swarm in the early part of the morning or late in the afternoon. Termites are attracted to light so they usually fly towards windows, doors mirrors or lights. During swarming season termites are not the only ones that go through this metamorphosis, ants also grow wings and swarm. The easiest way to differentiate a termite from an ant is by looking at their bodies; an ant will have three distinct and separate body parts: head, thorax (mid-section) and abdomen. While a termite will only have two a head and body; the thorax and abdomen are joint together.

• Drywood Termites: These are the more common of the two. We can usually distinguish them by their pellet-like droppings which may come in different colors (depending on the wood they are eating) but always the same shape and size (like small footballs). These termites can most often be found in attics, window sills, door frames, baseboards, outside fascia boards, wood trim, and wooden decks and patios. The drywood termite can be found in all parts of Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach county.

• Subterranean Termites: Unlike Drywood Termites that extract all of the nutrients they need from the wood, Subterranean Termites need a source of water which they almost always find under ground where they build their nests. They build mud tubes or tunnels to connect the nest to the food source. On rare occasions, Subterranean Termites may be able to build a nest above ground or a satellite nest, if they have a source of moisture or water from a leaky pipe, A/C unit or leaky roof. Mud tubes or tunnels are usually found around pipes going under the house, ascending from the ground to the structure or protruding from walls and/or trim. The subterranean termite can be found in all parts of Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach county.
